U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley said on Wednesday the U.S. military is considering coordinating with the Taliban in their apparent shared effort to defeat the Islamic State group’s branch in Afghanistan known as ISIS-K and Daesh.

“It’s possible,” Milley told reporters in a short press conference Wednesday afternoon when asked about joining forces with the Taliban for the counterterror effort, US News reported.

U.S. military officers have also said that the Taliban’s decision to liberate all detainees from prisons the U.S. established during its 20-year war in Afghanistan has returned to the battlefield as many as 2,000 ISIS-K fighters.

ISIS-K, a branch of the original group that arose in Iraq and Syria in 2014, claimed responsibility for an attack on an airport gate in Kabul that killed over 100 people, including 13 U.S. service members, last week.

U.S. military and administration officials have revealed in recent days levels of coordination during the evacuation between American planners in Afghanistan and the Taliban.

These include reports that the U.S. relied on the Taliban to shepherd Americans through chaotic scenes in Kabul and to the airport gates for evacuation.
